Allstar Work placement

Updated: May 2, 2023

I’m Serena, I am 17 and a student from Shipley College studying level 3 media and I am in my last year. This academic year I have been placed on a placement at Allstars, where I have developed my skills in a range of areas like observing filming, editing videos, using sound equipment and more, this has been a very fun experience for me as I have been able to grow, upskill and find what I like and what works best for me.

On my first day of placement, I was very worried about if I could do it or having to socialise with others as this is not a strong point of mine, however, I have become much more confident with these things as time has gone on and I am very grateful to be able to have this opportunity alongside my main course in order to progress in other areas that may be more difficult to do in a normal college setting.

I have been able to meet new people of my age and older, with different experiences and being able to discuss that is a great thing that I thoroughly enjoy. For the last few weeks, I have been working alongside the healthy minds apprentices who specialise in young people’s mental health specifically (but can be of any age) and the challenges they face today. I have observed filming and practised with the sound equipment while also editing the videos that are produced.

I am looking forward to seeing what the next few months will bring in terms of my placement and I am hoping to shadow some more filming for learning purposes and get involved in events if that is possible, this is something I have been interested in for a while but just never had the chance to do.

I have logged my placement on to Navigate which is a website that we use at college during enrichment sessions but also can be used to document my placement days, confirming if I have attended and what I have learnt that day, this is something I do twice a week which are the days I attend my placement.

By the end of this placement, I am hoping to be more confident with my editing skills, using sound equipment and overlooking filming and making suggestions about how to improve certain aspects. I have currently actively been in placement now for 2 months and have already learnt a lot about these areas I am hoping to learn more before I finish in June.
